The town was first called Bluffton. The name Lanett joins two names, Lafayette Lanier and Theodore Bennett, who founded the West Point Manufacturing Company.
The Chattahoochee forms Lanett's eastern edge from I-85 up to downtown. North of downtown the state line leaves the river and runs over land between Lanett and West Point, so you can cross into Georgia without crossing a bridge. I-85 forms the city's southeast edge, with Valley on the other side.
